Kyle Beckerman, Nick Rimando and Tony Beltran were back in Salt Lake, but had Thursday off after playing in Wednesday night’s all-star game.

Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis had expressed his desire to see the trio play as little as possible in the exhibition match, in hopes that he could play Beckerman and Rimando in Colorado on Saturday. (Beltran will be serving a one-game suspension for a red card he picked up against Toronto before leaving for the Gold Cup).

Beltran played the full 90 minutes in a 3-1 loss to AS Roma, while Beckerman and Rimando each logged 45 minutes of action. That should ease some conce...

New York Red Bull midfielder Tim Cahill will miss the MLS All-Star game on Wednesday after suffering a hard tackle by Real Salt Lake’s Yordany Alvarez on Saturday.

Cahill called the challenge “the worst tackle of my life,” but the Australian managed to stay in the game for 85 minutes, scoring New York’s first goal of the match.

“It was the worst tackle of my life, 17 years of playing,” Cahill said after the match. “I just watched it again and I don’t know how I got up. I took a nasty knock, but for me, it’s all about playing. I guess the adrenalin got the best of me.”

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Josh Saunders underwent surgery Tuesday to repair his torn left ACL, and will miss the rest of the MLS season.

Saunders, a 32-year-old veteran who helped lead Los Angeles to two straight MLS Cups, signed with Salt Lake this offseason and was the primary backup to Nick Rimando. Saunders tore his ACL on July 13 against FC Dallas, in what was only his third league game for Real. The team expects Saunders to miss six months.

Barring an early exit from Gold Cup play, Rimando won’t rejoin RSL until after Saturday’s matchup against the New York Red Bulls. That leaves bac...

Given the top-of-the-table clash with Sporting Kansas City (and the controversy that surrounded the 2-1 loss) Saturday was obviously a big day for Real Salt Lake.

A little lost in that shuffle, however, was some good news for the team’s future.

RSL’s Under-15/16 youth team won the national Development Academy championship Saturday in Houston, becoming the first residential program to win that title.

The Real Salt Lake team, based out of Casa ...

Sandy • Third-string goalkeeper Jeff Attinella will get a real test this weekend, as he starts against a Sporting Kansas City side that leads the league in shots.

But for all the talk about Attinella, Real Salt Lake’s center back situation seems equally important.

With Chris Schuler, Kwame Watson-Siriboe and Carlos Salcedo all out with injury, the team is down to just a few options for Nat Borchers’ partner in the middle of the back line.

RSL traded a pair of draft picks earlier this week to D.C. United for Brandon McDonald.

It’s a dangerous time to be a Real Salt Lake center back.

First Chris Schuler goes down with a foot injury, then his replacement, Kwame Watson-Siriboe, suffers a season-ending ACL tear.

His backup, meanwhile, is set to miss at least a week while recovering from gall bladder surgery over the weekend.

“It seems a little bit unlucky to be a center back on our team at the moment,” RSL coach Jason Kreis said after training Tuesday.

But the team could be getting some good news at the position. Schuler, who hasn’t played since May, could return to action withi...

Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes has selected Real Salt Lake’s Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran to be a part of the MLS All-Star game. The squad will play AS Roma on July 31 in Kansas City. Here is the rest of the roster:

Goalkeeper: Raul Fernández (FC Dallas), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC)

Real Salt Lake has waived seldom-used midfielder David Viana.

The 21-year-old Portuguese attacker came to RSL in September 2012, but never found a regular spot in coach Jason Kreis’ rotation. Viana made just two MLS appearances for the team, both coming in October of last year.

Viana has experience playing for his country’s youth teams. He played for RC Strasbourg’s youth side and spent a year with Atletico Madrid C, the La Liga club’s second reserve team, before joining RSL on a free transfer.

Viana was waived prior to the July 1 cutoff, meaning his contract was not fully guarante...

Real Salt Lake is suddenly suffering a center back shortage.

Chris Schuler, the starter for the season’s first 12 games, is already dealing with a foot injury. Now, backup Kwame Watson-Siriboe could miss significant time because of a likely ACL injury.

Watson-Siriboe suffered an injury in the third minute of a reserve game Saturday in Phoenix. He played five more minutes before being taken out of the game.

Doctors initially believed Watson-Siriboe had injured his meniscus, a team source said, but it appears now to be a more serious ACL injury. The extent of the injury and the amoun...

Real Salt Lake midfielder Ned Grabavoy has been fined for an extra-time flop against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Grabavoy was streaking down the left side of the field Saturday, when Galaxy midfielder Marcelo Sarvas made a challenge and Grabavoy fell to the grass. The referee ultimately showed Sarvas a yellow card.

But after the MLS Disciplinary Committee reviewed the play, Grabavoy was fined an undisclosed amount for “simulation.”

The incident, however, could still prove more costly for L.A. Sarvas is set to miss the Galaxy’s game against the Portland Timbe...

Real Salt Lake will host its U.S. Open Cup game on May 28.

RSL will play the winner of the May 21 contest between the Atlanta Silverbacks, of the North American Soccer League, and the Georgia Revolution, of the National Premier Soccer League.

RSL is 5-80 all-time in U.S. Open Cup play and lost 3-1 to the NASL’s Minnesota Stars in the third round of last year’s cup. Salt Lake’s best finishes came in 2006 and 2011, advancing both times to the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Plata, who had two assists on the night, and Javier Morales are up for Latin American Player of the Week honors.

And finally, Enzo Martinez, on loan to the Carolina RailHawks is a contender or the NASL Play of the Week for his 84th minute blast to tie the game. Martinez was sent to ...

Sandy • The Vancouver Whitecaps have won just two matches this season, and sit in seventh place in the Western Conference. But Real Salt Lake boss Jason Kreis says Saturday’s matchup with the Canadian club is as important as any his team has played so far.

“This is as critical a game as we’ve faced all year,” he said after training Friday at Rio Tinto Stadium. “To come back from a very disappointing performance last weekend (a 2-0 defeat at home to the L.A. Galaxy), we need to make a statement to ourselves about how good we are, and how willing we are to work, and how much we want things. So, for me, it’s a critical match.”

Enzo Martinez came in to his first Real Salt Lake training camp with high expectations and, by his own admission, in terrible shape.

“I don’t think I could have done worse than my first year,” the 22-year-old said earlier this year after playing in an exhibition win over BYU.

A season removed from a disappointing rookie season, RSL’s 2012 first-round draft pick has yet to play a minute with the first team. He’s made the 18 only once, on the final game of last season, but Martinez has shown improvement. By all accounts, he came in to camp this year in terrific shape and he’s made progress while logging 561 minu...

Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando says the Los Angeles Galaxy may be the most dangerous team he’s faced yet this season. But don’t expect that to change the way RSL plays come Saturday evening.

“I think we’re both maybe stubborn teams that like to play our style of soccer,” Nick Rimando said. “They don’t match up against us to benefit them and we don’t match up against them. We go out there and play our diamond shape. They play their shape and it’s really whose soccer is better that day.”

“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess, yeah. Every team’s a rival.”

“But nothing special beyond ...” a reporter said.

“We’ve had some really good games with them over the years,” Donovan replied. “I guess you create rivalries by playing important games against teams that mean something. And we’ve had a lot of that over the last few years. All that says to me is that we’re two teams that are consistently very good. And that comes down to the stability of the organiz...

The United States Under-20 team will hold camp later this month, but Real Salt Lake midfielder Luis Gil, a staple of the squad, will not be present.

The 19-year-old Gil was left off the list of 24 players announced Monday. Gil’s spot on the team, however, is certainly secure. Gil seldom attends U-20 camps noncompetitive midseason camps. And U-20 coach Tab Ramos’ most recent call ups are largely fringe players who could compete for the team’s final few spots.

“Choosing Salt Lake for a very important game in the qualifying process is an easy choice,” Klinsmann said in a news release. “We think the crowd will give us huge support, loud, noisy, pushing us forward and giving us a lot of energy for 90 minutes. I took a look this week at Real Salt Lake’s careful development of midfielder Luis Gil, who was just 16 when he signed his pro contract with Major League Soccer.

When I spoke with RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando, the veteran brought up a familiar name: Freddy Adu. Rimando played with Adu in D.C. and in Salt Lake, and he compared the pressure the two teen sensations experienced early in their careers, and contrasted their development.

Here’s a potential parallel to keep in mind in the coming months: Adu had a resurgence after a solid showing in the U-20 World Cup in 2007. His performance in the...

The U.S. currently sits in first place in Group A thanks to the tiebreaker it holds over Costa Rica. A tie in tonight’s match (which will be televised on Fox Soccer) would give the Americans the Group A title and a quarterfinal matchup with either Canada or Nicaragua. U.S. Soccer on Tuesday announced the March 22 Men’s National Team match against Costa Rica will be played in Denver. Salt Lake City and Kansas City had been reported as the other possibilities for the site.

Among the biggest factors in the decision: altitude. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann wanted a match at elevation before his team plays Mexico, and he will certainly get one in Denver.
