Mostly, the LDS Church’s new missionary grooming standards make "elders" (male) and "sisters" (female) appear more, well, up-to-date — like contemporary professionals.
But one change seems inexplicable — skinny ties are on the forbidden list, along with string, bow or wide ties.

These Mormon ambassadors are expected to choose "only business- or professional-style ties," and even a men’s fashion magazine says ties should not be too thin or too fat.
"At GQ, we like a narrow — but not super-skinny — tie, about two and a quarter to two and three-quarter inches at its widest point," it says in a tutorial on ties. "Much wider than that and you start to look like a congressman."
That thin-but-not-too-thin advice, however, may not be the style in, say, France or Germany.
"Skinny ties are 1.5 to 2.5 inches in width," according to Tie-a-Tie.net" target="_blank">Tie-a-Tie.net, "and will look best with modern European cut suits." And, the blog adds, on "younger men," which clearly includes the now 18-year-old Mormon missionaries.
But there’s no word on any tie exceptions for those missionaries coming from or going to Europe.
