The Civil Wars, the folk duo of John Paul White and Joy Williams, acrimoniously broke up in late 2013, but before they disbanded in the midst of a European tour they recorded enough material for a second album. Because of the circumstances, you would expect their sophomore record to be a disorganized hodge-podge, but in one of the most remarkable surprises of the year, the album “The Civil Wars” is one of the most cohesive and captivating albums of the year. This second album shows how much combustible chemistry the two created during the non-stop touring that followed in the wake of their Grammy-winning debut, “Barton Hollow,” and with a more robust back... |

Fitz & The Tantrums are the perfect warm act for Bruno Mar’s “Moonshine Jungle World Tour,” because the band’s sophomore album, “More Than Just a Dream,” encapsulates the joy the collective has exhibited since forming in 2008. The Los Angeles-based band can no longer be defined as simply neo-soul, said Noelle Scaggs, who shares lead singing duties with bandleader Michael Fitzpatrick. The question each member asked one another as they prepared to record the new album was, she said, “How much can we develop our sound?” As a result, the sound is more bombastic, in the best sense of the word: it gets the party started with influences ranging from New Wave... |

I can’t keep straight whether Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are still an item, but one thing I do know is that on her new album, “Stars Dance,” she has grown up — and not just because she is sporting cleavage inside the glossy CD packaging and muddied up her image in the film “Spring Breakers” earlier this year. Gomez turned 21 on July 22, and is just four years younger than Rihanna, so it makes sense that Gomez is staying away from insipid faux-inspirational songs such as “Who Says” and insipider faux-clever tunes such as “Love You Like a Love Song” of a few years ago.
