It is among the least populous area codes in North America, serving only about 320,000 people.
Area code 906 is in the Eastern Time Zone except for the counties bordering Wisconsin which are in the Central Time Zone.

906 was created as a split from 616 on Sunday, March 19, 1961, as a flash-cut, with no official permissive dialing.
Due to its low population density, it is not expected to be exhausted until 2043.[1]
