Police say man in N. Kerby Ave. house not a threat

UPDATE: SERT, other officers leave after talking with man's family

Portland’s Crisis Negotiation Team has left the North Kerby Avenue home after a Tuesday morning incident involving a man who may have had a mental health crisis.

Police said negotiators and the Special Emergency Reaction Team left the area after the man's family talked to officers about the situation. Officers determined that the man was not a threat.

The bureau's Behavioral Health Unit officers, who are familiar with the man inside the house, also said they would follow up to make sure he receives treatment.

The incident began at about 6:38 a.m. Jan. 27, when North Precinct officers were called the house in the 4000 block of North Kerby Avenue because a man suffering a mental health crisis was possibly armed with a knife was inside with a woman. Officers tried unsuccessfully to contact the man using a patrol car’s loud speaker.

Houses near the man’s home were evacuated. North Kerby Avenue was closed during the incident.
