REVIEW: Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of a Dark Dusk

I still can't believe they skipped multiple volumes. It sounds like, going by this review, it went exactly how I thought it would.

The floor-clearing action is supposed to be the backdrop to the real central storyline of Progressive, which centers around some peculiarly human-like NPCs (one of whom joins Kirito and Asuna's party right after the end of the first movie and l stays with them mostly through all the books so far, eaving temporarily exactly at the point this movie skipped to) and the actual storyline of the original SAO game involving a struggle between the Forest Elves, Dark Elves and Fallen Elves over a set of keys that were created when slices of the world were assembled into Aincrad by an ancient wizard.

Take that stuff out and yeah, it's going to feel a little hollow.

Yeah, I had similar thoughts. Although, in my case, it's more confusion. Because if anything, people complained about how the first arc skipped around the way it did, and the studio even had Kawahara write up a first floor storyline in order to expand on it, which is what gave him the inspiration to go floor-by-floor, like everyone seemed to expect/want. So, he finally does that and now...the anime decides to adapt it as movies and skip huge sections of the books, resulting in the same haphazard pacing after all. I just don't understand this at all.

It would've made more sense to either adapt this as a series during the gap between arcs, or after the final arc is done to continue milking the franchise. And this is coming from someone who isn't very fond of this series, btw.

Speaking of Mito, what are the chances she'll end up one the players who die in SAO?

I'm really not sure where this Mito plotline is going since it has nothing to do with the books and is completely anime only.

Excellent point, yeah! The main selling point of SAO:P was "we won't skip stuff this time." So, for anime-only fans, the reason for Progressive to exist is immediately null and void at just the second installment.

I'm of two opinions about this.

On the one hand, she's the fanfic (and these movies are definitely fanfics of the lowest order) writer's beloved Mary Sue. Of course she will never die.

On the other hand, since 'Asuna's best friend' never showed up in any of the other media, she presumably has to die. I'm thinking they will kill her off as an excuse to push Asuna and Kirito back together after their canon separation.

Either way and as expected, PINO2 doesn't fail to disappoint.
