Histories Branch Overview

The Histories Branch serves as the institutional memory of the United States Navy.  Our mission is to strengthen the Navy’s effectiveness by preserving, analyzing, and interpreting the service’s hard-earned experience. A professional staff of naval historians supports the fleet, Navy leadership, and the public.

The Histories Branch is made up of 24 naval historians who are divided between three teams - the Fleet History Team, the OPNAV Historical Support Team, and the Public History and Education Team.

The Branch is led by the Administrative Team of:

  • Dr. Gregory Bereiter, Branch Chief
  • Dr. Martin Waldman, Acting Branch Deputy Chief

The Histories Branch of the Naval History and Heritage Command is located on the Washington Navy Yard, 805 Kidder Breese Street, SE, Washington, DC 20374-5060
