Kirby: Planet Robobot

Kirby: Planet Robobot is an excellent 3DS action platform game. It has all the charm you want from a Kirby game, but with more puzzles and action. It’s my favorite Kirby game, and is one of the best games to release this year. Simply put: Kirby: Planet Robobot is amazing.

Years from now, when the Nintendo fans of the future are making lists of the top Kirby games ever made, you can bet that Planet Robobot will be ranking at – or at least very near – the top. [Issue #22 – July/August 2016, p.70]

Kirby: Planet Robobot is an extremely fun 2D action platformer that uses old and new mechanics from the series in smart ways. While a bit short, the game is sure to provide a fun gameplay experience.

Kirby: Planet Robobot was a pleasant surprise, no doubt, but especially as someone who could generally look at a Kirby game and take it or leave it. It's one thing to please fans, but to win over indifference is kind of a big deal to me.

Kirby Planet Robobot continues the excellence and consistent fun and variety of the Kirby series from the past few years. It tightens up established mechanics and adds some great new ideas, which all comes together into one of the most enjoyable and genuinely friendly games I’ve played all year.

What an absolute joy to play through. With Kirby: Planet Robobot, Nintendo and HAL have delivered not only a standard Kirby platform outing for Nintendo 3DS that matches the usual high quality levels found throughout the series, but have managed to bring many new elements into the mix to ensure that this is the freshest Kirby to date, merging clever ideas from other genre stable-mates with the traditional qualities everyone knows and loves.

Kirby: Planet Robobot sets a new gold standard in a franchise already renowned for excellent platforming.

There’s a careful balance between sticking to a series’ roots at the risk of getting stale, and pushing boundaries at the risk of straying from what made the series great to start with – but that’s a tightrope Kirby’s been walking effortlessly for 25 years.

For anyone new to the Kirby franchise, Planet Robobot’s strong gameplay mechanics, inviting controls and eye-popping 3D provide a perfect starting point. The sheer amount of content along with the flawless soundtrack all contribute to the already incredible package.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is yet another Kirby game, which I personally consider a positive. The new abilities and mechanized gimmickry are huge fun to fiddle around with, boss encounters are beautifully delivered, and the level design is some of the series’ most accomplished.

I had a blast with this game, and it might challenge for my favourite in the series. It’s crazy, it’s fun, it’s satisfying, and it’s badass. I am shocked at how much fun I had with Kirby: Planet Robobot.

All this praise and I’m mostly referring to the single player main story, but with its bevy of other cool unlockable modes and the multiplayer party like games available, there is so much content here, it’s a great price for an absolutely jam packed 3DS cartridge.

It serves up exactly what the series is known for with a new twist, and it does so with awe-inspiring ease. One of my biggest takeaways was how completely I was transported to a space of childlike joy while I played it.

It’s probably one of the pink puffball’s shorter adventures, but the new mech gimmick provides a fun and fresh take on Kirby’s action-platforming core that I couldn’t get enough of.

A charming, fast and original 2d platform, pretty to see and enjoyable to play.

From the first moment you encounter the mech suit to when you hop on a Warp Star after beating the final boss, Planet Robobot is a joyous adventure built on a foundation of fun abilities, engrossing level design, and boundless delight.

There's a lot of Kirby for your money here, and the pink fluffball is at the top of his game.

Overall, this is a great platformer done better than most of the competition out there.

It hit every note that it needed to and didn’t try to be something it wasn’t. Maybe that’s the secret to Kirby’s longevity. It knows what it is and what it shouldn’t try to be.

A fantastic addition to the 3DS library with a well polished gameplay experience that doesn’t feel ‘dumbed down’ or like a mobile game. Clever level design, nice visuals, and the added mech-suit really make Planet Robobot stand out as a Kirby title, and is one of his most enjoyable entries to date. Planet Robobot is the same old, funny and colorful Kirby game. Enjoyable, full of extra modes and a bit on the predictable side.

Although it offers no challenge whatsoever and is quite short, this is a charming game, full with inspired mini-games, great design and unique levels.

Nintendo’s Kirby: Planet Robobot introduces the pink protagonist to a brand new platforming mechanic in the form of a giant mech suit, and the end result is rather refreshing.

There's no need to reinvent the wheel when all your fan are asking for just another cute platformer: this is what Hal laboratories must have thought, and the new Kirby adventure is charming and relaxing as the previous ones.

In all, there’s a surprising amount of content, but it’s only the story mode that’s worth playing.

It’s a great game for the young ones, and still enough there for older players, but if you’re looking for a challenge, there are some stronger contenders on the 3DS.

Use your kid as an excuse to buy it, then start a fresh save file and play through it yourself once she’s fallen asleep.

Like its iconic hero, Planet Robobot is light and airy, and a little on the short side, but it takes such a range of forms that it always feels fresh and new.

It doesn't keep quite the same appeal so many years later, as good as it still may be.

Planet Robobot may not be the most challenging platformer around, but its clever use of robotic destruction combined with gorgeous environmental puzzles and unique bosses make for an entertaining ride. I only wish Kirby’s monstrous mech suit could make proper use of the huge amount of collectibles.

If ain't broke, don't fix it: HAL Laboratory took that to the heart when they developed Planet Robobot, an extremely derivative sequel to the excellent Triple Deluxe. Kirby's new adventure is a fun and rich one, but it plays too safe the mechs featured do not really add that much to the same old structure.

Planet Robobot's meager difficulty may feel like a turn off at times, but it's not a reason to write it off. Once you spend time sampling the large selection of powers in each stage, taking in the detailed visuals, the catchy soundtrack, and exploring the wealth of extra modes on hand, you are so focused on the game's pervasive charm that you're looking forward to the next delightful surprise, rather than praying for a grueling test of skill. Planet Robobot is another great feather in Kirby's cap that shouldn't be overlooked.

In spite of the recycled, hence reliable machinery, Kirby: Planet Robobot is simply mecha powerful.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is a great new addition to the classic series. Aside from the new mech suit it doesn't do a whole lot different from its predecessors, but that shouldn't bother those who just want another great 2D platformer for their 3DS collection.

Planet Robobot is entertaining, flows well, and never overstays its new mechanics… but occasionally feels like a retread with a mechanical theme. It does find something to differentiate itself, however, with its ending which takes a surprising leap from the established Kirby norms for a wholly surprising and engaging climax. The game extends past its final boss with completely different gameplay that works as a great finale.

Kirby: Planet Robobot might be easy, but it’s an equally satisfying platformer to play on the go with the 3DS. It’s an adventure that the round pick hero begs you to join him on, and you’d be hard pressed to be dissatisfied with the journey.

If such simplicity could be considered as a drawback of the game it will be a really minor flaw because even just experimenting with dozens of skills is very funny. [Issue#210, p.85]

Kirby: Planet Robobot is a strong game in the Kirby franchise, adding a super awesome mechanic suit for Kirby. It does make the game a bit too easy though.

Kirby: Planet Robobot isn’t too deep, but it doesn’t need to be. It captures the fun, jovial nature of its titular character, and breathes some life into an otherwise tepid formula. It’s brief and hardly earth-shatteringly unique, but it’s fun in the way a Kirby game ought to be.

Kirby Planet Robobot tries to bring some new features, and that deserves to be said. Nothing crazy of course, but it gives this new entry an identity for itself. The game is still very easy, is still quite short but it remains a very nice moment of gaming and nobody will ask for his money back.

By the fifth of the six main zones, the game becomes a dull gauntlet of repetitive mini-bosses.

Full of imagination and great ideas, but Kirby seems destined to repeat the same mistakes forever – with zero challenge and aimless, unfocused game design.

Kirby Robobot relies on creativity and a "think out of the box" philosophy, adorned with jolly and light-hearted aesthetics. Unfortunately, it's almost too easy to complete the game, especially if you played your fair share of platformers. It's a game that will probably appeal the younger (and less experienced) player.

Kirby: Planet Robobot is a great addition to the franchise, adding a mechanic that doesn’t feel forced and is overall not a terribly shallow package. But looking under the hood the game uses a lot of the same tricks that Kirby Triple Deluxe did and will probably captivate your time about as well. It’s certainly one that younger audiences will get a kick out of, but it’s no Kirby’s Fun Pak.

While the robot motif comes in half-cocked, Planet Robobot is still a safe, serviceable Kirby game. After beating the story and reflecting on it, many elements felt like just going through the motions, but those motions haven't gotten stale yet after nearly 25 years.

Cute, colorful and imaginative game offers you plenty of tools but hardly any gaming challenge. If you just want to "fly-by" another game without a pressure, you have the opportunity. [Issue#265]
