If you like the general style of first person shooters but feel they need a bit of a fresh change… this will likely be just what you are looking for. A lot of fun and a beautiful spectacle to take in. Highly recommended!

Of course, the fact that Immortals of Aveum is a lot of fun to play will also make you want to invest your time (and money) in it. It may not be the most original game I’ve ever played, but when it’s this enjoyable, I’m okay with that.

Ascendant Studios' debut title is filled with greatness. Gorgeous visuals, a fun and intriguing story with memorable characters, engaging and thrilling combat and well balanced puzzles make up what's easily a must-play game.

Kudos to EA for mentoring a game that brings new and effective ideas to the FPS formula. Immortals is a big, dynamic and appealing shooter, even with some derivative aspects in its aesthetics and design.

Even with inconsistent visuals, Immortals of Aveum is an enrapturing experience. Its combat gives players a stunning amount of choices and emboldens them to become the ultimate murderous magnus. The narrative doesn’t give into the most bland fantasy clichés, either, and instead tells a well-constructed tale with flawed characters that are given the space to grow. It’s a magical first effort from Ascendant that has set the stage to grow into a spellbinding series.

Immortals of Aveum doesn’t settle for the bare minimum of what a shooter has to be. It excels in writing, controls, and sound design to deliver an epic adventure for all who play. Its unrivaled narrative direction sets itself apart, providing players with a truly magical world to discover. Still, menuing could use some refining alongside providing more memorable boss encounters. Regardless, this is a standout adventure and a great game.

With its supernatural shootouts, some may dismiss Immortals of Aveum as Call of Duty with magic, but it’s so much more than that. It has the mechanics to spice up combat in all the right ways, even if it’s a bit of a learning curve, and battles can get very hectic because of how much there is to keep track of. A slight misstep in the prologue is easily forgotten about when you watch the rest of the story unfold, skillfully dodging the usual military-esque tropes that tend to follow a genre like this, instead giving us solidly built and enjoyable characters to flesh out a damn fine world-building suite. If a mystical boomer shooter sounds like a magical time, Immortals of Aveum is sure to leave you under its spell.

A fantasy FPS not very original in terms of storytelling and themes but still fun, fairly challenging and technically appreciable. The combat system based on the use of three different types of magic and a fair variety of customizations make for a solid and well-balanced experience.

Immortals of Aveum boldly attempts to deliver an epic cinematic experience about a war involving magic, and it succeeds in its ambition. Fast-paced combat that places the game firmly in the shooter genre combine with satisfying platforming and puzzle-solving to make for an adventure that stays focused on its linear story while offering extra secrets for those who want to explore beyond its core narrative. There’s some repetition here and there that can be frustrating, but when you’re blasting colourful magic spells across battlefields of enemies like a violent fireworks display, it’s hard not to be impressed. Visually stunning with an excellently committed cast, Immortals of Aveum is a satisfying adventure and an impressive debut from a studio clearly not afraid to defy expectations.

EA was smart to snatch up the rights to Immortals of Aveum. It’s an impressive debut from Ascendant Studio, featuring a refreshing take on FPS combat, a great fantasy story with loads of interesting lore, and an endearing cast of characters. Bottom line – I can’t wait to see what Ascendant does next.

I had a ton of fun with Immortals. The combat is snappy, explosive, and smooth. Everything looks amazing, just a colossal colorful assault on the senses at every turn. The puzzles are a pleasant distraction. The writing has its ups and downs, to be sure, but the story itself is a proper ride. I truly can’t get enough of the word Everwar. I could have used a bit less quipping in the dialogue, however. While the combat occasionally got frustrating, it’s nothing a little practice (and difficulty adjustment) can’t fix. Traversal is a good time, even if the dodge cooldown feels excessive. If your first-person shooters have felt too serious lately, take heart! Immortals of Aveum is a magic-soaked, colorful romp that grips hard and doesn’t let go.

Immortals of Aveum is quite a fun shooter in a new world. Its combat and exploration are its most vital points, but abrupt changes in pacing and various performance errors keep this new IP from greatness.

An original IP is always a good thing. An original IP that's also fun to play is even better. Immortals of Aveum is a fun magic shooter that takes the great arcade shooting of DOOM and combines it with fun exploration and puzzle solving. Its great animations and voice work help move a slightly sluggish story forward as best it can. But none of these issues kept me from enjoying my time as an Immortal.

Despite a few niggles, our journey through Aveum has been a blast. Being in the shoes of Jak is a great deal of fun and although his range of abilities can feel a little overwhelming, mastering his powers is exhilarating. If a fast-paced adventure through a gorgeous world, backed by a solid story and excellent acting sounds like your thing (and why wouldn’t it?), don’t hesitate to jump right into Immortals of Aveum.

In some ways, Immortals of Aveum can be seen as a wasted opportunity to give shooter fans a memorable experience with an outstanding graphics. Instead, Ascendant Studios' debut game turned out to be just a good first-person shooter that entertains without being boring, thanks to a surprising RPG component and gameplay that excellently does its job of entertaining players. In addition to a decent story and a not particularly long campaign, Immortals of Aveum also has to contend with a less-than-stable frame-rate and other flaws that do not allow it to be one of the best shooters of the last years.

Net of a series of technical problems that we sincerely hope can be mitigated by the next patches, Immortals of Aveum is a convincing first-person magic shooter, which can be played with transport from start to finish. Although belonging to the shooter genre, the Ascendant Studio title is profoundly different from its colleagues and the predominant action component, combined with the presence of many tools to counter the opponents, makes every single battle exciting and spectacular. The complex lore at the base of the experience accompanies a valid plot, not without some less effective junctures, but sometimes capable of surprising the player, and certainly able to push him to complete Jak's journey.

Immortals of Aveum is a surprising shooter, certainly different from the usual, characterized by a very peculiar and suggestive setting, well supported by a narrative sector that may not be original but capable of involving and exciting with its well-drawn characters. A little uncertain at first, the gameplay quickly takes hold, catapulting us into ruthless and frenetic arenas; which from a certain point onwards perhaps become too difficult, suggesting that we withdraw and strengthen the character by exploiting the possibilities of a structure which, however, from this point of view is not studied in the slightest. Visually, the show and the latest technologies have been sought, but the consoles are struggling: we will soon find out if it is for a matter of mere optimization or limited hardware capabilities.

That an expensive-looking crowd-pleaser tries several new things feels like a small, welcome miracle, but maybe that’s overthinking it. What you want out of a blockbuster is a chance to go with the flow, let yourself get pushed to the edge of your seat for a few hours, and walk out with your blood pressure up a notch and a smile on your face. Immortals of Aveum does all that very well.

Immortals of Aveum is a great first outing, mixing the fantasy genre’s vibes, storytelling, and world exploration with the gunplay of a modern shooter. Its magic action almost always feels great, except when the game’s performance turns a fun explosion of magic and colors into a muddy mess. The story, which took me 16 hours to get through, is predictable but competent enough to get Jak to the next set piece, and there’s plenty left to explore and accomplish after rolling credits that I’m excited to check out. Ascendant made a good call emphasizing exploration and combative puzzle-solving just as much as its first-person action, and Immortals of Aveum is proof this genre still has a lot of room to grow outside of the usual, expected releases.

For a first outing by a brand new studio, Immortals of Aveum is a spectacular accomplishment. Immortals of Aveum, in many ways, is a game about ambition. From its development as a new IP during the pandemic, to the overarching goals of the heroes and villains respectively. In its ambition, it has created a first-person magical shooter that looks and feels like everything it set out to achieve in forging its own identity. However, in its attempt to create a bold new world, it also sometimes falters under the weight of that same ambition. This results in some convoluted concepts that don’t quite hit all the right notes and narrative pacing that tries to cram in too much all at once.

Immortals of Aveum is a successful first game from Ascendant Studios. Combining a shooter with magic makes for interesting gameplay, and much attention has been paid to the lore, environments and variety in combat. This picks up well and makes for an enjoyable experience. At the same time, the performance is not yet optimal due to a unstable framerate and some jokes feel a bit out of place. That being said, Immortals of Aveum has a fine adventure to offer that is worthwhile with some rough edges every now and then, but they don't get in the way of enjoying the game.

Immortals of Aveum delivers high-octane magical action and a world we're fascinated by. While the narrative itself is predictable and the dialogue between characters can border on excruciating, the rock-solid gameplay is a magical foundation for EA to build on and develop into something special.

Ascendant Studios made a good first try with this game, which if you manage to dominate in combat can be entertaining for the user, especially with the amount of magic available. Of course, I would not recommend it to everyone, since some technical and repetition aspects may not be completely pleasing, especially those who do not have patience.

Focusing on magic instead of guns serves Immortals of Aveum well. The first-person-shooter deliver gorgeous looking combat that gives players tons of options to decimate their enemies. Unfortunately, the world-building and the story lack depth an rely heavily on fantasy-cliches.

Ascendant Studio manages to lay a solid foundation in the magical FPS genre without, however, rising to the heights of the greatest. So much the better for them then, since they are therefore following the same path as their master.

Immortals of Aveum introduces some captivating concepts, albeit with a few hiccups in execution. The combat system can be a bit perplexing, and the narrative takes its sweet time to get going without delivering the expected excitement. Additionally, technical performance issues crop up. Nevertheless, our time spent with this single-player game wasn't without its charms. The world of Aveum is undeniably beautiful, and the combat system, while flawed, manages to be entertaining and holds promise. Perhaps a follow-up installment could refine these elements and address the game's shortcomings.

Immortals of Aveum is a great shooter with nice and fast gameplay, nice world building and a fairly interesting story. It doesn't do much wrong, but just lacks soul to become your new favorite FPS, unless you were really waiting for a Call of Duty with magic and dragons.

Despite this game’s flaws with repetitive combat and an awkward beginning to the story, I hope there’s a sequel on the way. The combat’s thrillingly fast-paced, and the storyline actually grabbed me during its final hours. If a sequel adds way more enemy variety and improves the MCU-like script, Immortals of Aveum 2 could be a hit.

Immortals of Aveum is a fun magical FPS that takes place in a colorful and spectacular world made in Unreal Engine 5. It has a frenetic and agile combat system, a modest replayability component and a fresh proposal. However, its predictable story, flat characters and the irregular aesthetic presentation end up being a difficult burden to drag. When it shows its best side it is pure fun, but when the action slows down and the dialogues, the exploration of generic areas and the constant updating in the forge begin, it can become repetitive and even tedious.

Immortals of Aveum is a perfect game for a subscription service. It has its flaws, but most of them can be easily eliminated in the future. However, I can't shake the feeling that this game has been left for dead even though it is really cool.

It’s faced-paced, well acted and packed full of thrilling fun. And while it’s certainly not the best FPS we’ve ever encountered, it will scratch that itch until the big boys come out to play in the run-up to Christmas. Gamers should enjoy its change of pace and it’s a shame there was no attempt at a multiplayer as I suspect that’d be this game’s shining mode.

As it is, Immortals of Aveum is fun but short-lived and doesn’t offer anything that hasn’t been done before. It’s not perfect nor is it bad, but like its protagonist, the game is more of a jack of all trades than a master of one.
  44. Immortals of Aveum is a solid first effort from a brand-new studio. It’s not without its troubles, of which there are many, and it absolutely does not land half of the concepts it’s trying to pull off, but there’s a glimmer of a great game in there. If nothing else, it’s worth playing just to see somebody do something different in a triple-A space that so rarely innovates.

Immortals of Aveum is the epitome of a good game. The characters are well-acted and the world design is fantastic. The story though feels too safe and there’s no real wow moment. Immortals of Aveum isn't a terrible game, but it is an incredibly forgettable one. Everything it does feels like a paint-by-numbers scenario, and it doesn't feel like it captures any sense of wonder. The annoying quipping dialogue drags you out of the world, and without that, you're left with a solid, if entirely unexceptional, magic-themed FPS. There's not much to recommend Immortals beyond giving you gun-themed magic instead of guns. I could see it perhaps finding an audience once its price point is lower, but most people will probably want to wait and see — or at least watch some videos of Jak's quips and see how tolerable they find it.

Immortals of Aveum is not quite the must-have new IP that some would have hoped, but there are some genuine moments of brilliance here. It has absolutely fantastic minute-to-minute combat, and once the player is in sync with their powers it's a wonderfully fluid experience. Unfortunately its story and writing doesn't match its gameplay, and its visual design is a bit of a mixed bag, but with gameplay that ranks among the most enjoyable for shooters of this generation so far, those flaws may well be worth overlooking.

There is plenty to praise when considering that this is Ascendant's debut game and how it ended up being an incredibly competent and entertaining experience that manages to pull off a solid combat system and a fun story. However, there really isn’t much that feels new or particularly interesting otherwise. It is clear that a lot of thought and care has been put into all systems of Immortals of Aveum, from its shooting to its puzzles, but none of it is compelling enough for another playthrough. Immortals of Aveum is well-executed, easy to digest, and remarkably solid, but overall incredibly familiar. Still, it may pleasantly surprise more than one shooter fan, and has enough going for it to likely attract a dedicated audience.

Immortals of Aveum at its core is a fun take on the shooter genre. Yet it quickly bogs itself down with an over-complicated story and an unnecessary gearing system. Set in a new world that’s fun to explore, Aveum has the potential to be a great universe to revisit in the future.

Immortals of Aveum makes a solid early impression with engaging magic-infused FPS action and eye-catching Unreal Engine 5 visuals, but a predictable plot, irritating characters, and repetitive, by-the-books level design dims the game’s razzle-dazzle. Immortals of Aveum is a blockbuster action game. Much like superhero movies, it excels in combat but loses its heat in the story with lackluster dialogue and a hurried narrative. The cornerstone of Immortals is its graphics. The characters and environments were expertly crafted, highlighting the strong motion-captured characters. It was always refreshing to see how all the colors were utilized in each mission of the game. Excellent level design and fast-paced gameplay made a wonderful pair.

All in all, Immortals of Aveum is an interesting proposition, with an intense and fun combat system, even if it doesn't revolutionize the FPS genre. Less a case of biting off more than it can chew, Immortals of Aveum instead serves up a mixed bag of notable creativity, dragged down by issues both narrative and technical alike. While future patches may go some way to iron out the uneven frame-rate and inconsistent visual quality, the same can’t be said for a brand of writing that’s at best tolerable and at worst, potentially off-putting. Minus one or two secondary characters you’d be happy to see stick around for longer, yet are sadly ditched in service of a plot with brief but ultimately unfulfilled promise. If nothing else, Ascendant Studios could’ve done a lot worse given the tone and the design intentions placed here. What’s left is a game that while doesn’t always put its best foot forward, eventually finds a way to loop back round to feeling curious as to what it has tucked away out of shot. Though it may trip over itself one too many times, Immortals of Aveum‘s rewarding level design, puzzle-solving and potential for custom builds still offers a sufficient amount to carry this “magic-shooter” pitch through to credits’ end.

Immortals of Aveum, by virtue of its story, has obvious appeal. It's the game of a lifetime for a developer who knows what he's talking about, the raison d'être of a brand new studio, an independent AAA that isn't really one... For the gamer, it's a very edgy FPS that's off the beaten track while still offering a familiar feel. Ascend Studio's title makes for a great time if you put aside its obvious technical problems, which unfortunately do it a bit of a disservice. But the fact remains that Immortals of Aveum has a lot going for it. There's a rich universe to discover, a whole world to explore, and some nerve-wracking if slightly chaotic combat... It's a shame that the technical side isn't always up to scratch on the PS5, because this would be a more than solid magical FPS, but as it stands it's sorely lacking in polish. But that doesn't mean it's a failure, just a date that could have gone a little better, but that we enjoyed nonetheless.

Immortals of Aveum, in some areas, is a major success. A wonderfully crafted and frequently beautiful word is the perfect backdrop to enjoy its excellent combat system that’s as detailed as it is spellbinding. In others, it’s a frustrating case of overly-complex lore, a mediocre cast and a borderline dislikable protagonist. The result is a game that’s fun, if some way off as emotionally investing as it could – and maybe should – have been.

If you buy Immortals of Aveum, know that there is a good time here waiting for you. However, I deem it likely that it'll be on sale rather soon. If you're starving for some magic in your FPS pick it up, but even with some mystical flair and an admirable attempt at bringing mystic arts to a very gun-heavy genre, Immortals of Aveum ultimately fails to reach the heights of your Bulletstorms or Wolfenstiens.

Immortals of Aveum presents us with an interesting new fantasy universe in which magic replaces bullets, but in practice it doesn't quite hit the mark. Despite solid fundamental action, combat can quickly become difficult to read, devolving into a dizzying swirl of colourful effects. Solid presentation and performance lead to some visually arresting scenes, even if the story isn't particularly memorable. It's a good first effort from Ascendant Studios, and the potential is absolutely there, but there's a feeling that the team bit off a little more than it could chew.

Immortals of Aveum is so derivative as to make me question the accuracy of the word “uninspired” - this game absolutely is inspired. It’s taken so much inspiration from so much existing media there’s not a single unique element. Less of a story and more the creative slag oozing from a smelter full of adventure tropes, its narrative is matched in banality only by its gameplay. A bog standard, repetitive shooter that offers nothing new and does none of the old stuff well enough to justify doing it.

The Everwar between Lucium and Rasharn reminds me of what it feels like to play Immortals of Aveum, a game that feels perpetually at war with itself. Its jokey tone is at odds with its high stakes and the world it wants you to care about. Its movement-focused arena design is at odds with the precision it would require to make it start to sing. Its magical flavor is at odds with how bland its combat is. Its name may suggest something that will last forever, but I doubt I'll remember much about it by the end of next week.

Immortals of Aveum stops just short of fully complementing its traditional military shooter story with an engaging environmentalist message, instead opting to primarily use those narrative themes to inform the world design and lore. It leaves the overall story feeling half-baked, further highlighting the uncharacteristic actions of its unlikable protagonist. The actual shooting fares a bit better, especially in the first half, when combat is more like a color-coded puzzle. But it, too, falls short--the repeated use of enemies and arena layouts make for repetitive firefights and the sheer number of combat options is difficult to navigate when combat reaches an overwhelming fervor. I enjoyed small pieces of Immortals of Aveum, but not enough to strongly recommend.

Immortals of Aveum should be applauded for trying something unique and exciting. It’s not every day that a studio attempts to aesthetically reinvent the first-person shooter genre with its debut game, and it’s clear the folks at Ascendant Studios tried their damndest to make the “Call of Duty but with magic” concept work. But for all its overwhelming visual splendor and adherence to modern conventions like skill trees and stat-boosting equipment, Immortals of Aveum is just as soulless as the military shooters from which it takes inspiration. It’s a paint-by-numbers buffet of contemporary tropes, and even when regarded against the full scope of creative and moral bankruptcy in the AAA space, it somehow still manages to fade into the scenery.

The no artistic representations of female beuty in this game thsts for sure..The soy drinkers willl be happy. If your a real fan of gaming you know what this is before playing it. Another cringe filled bore festival, filled with ""Modern Writing"""and Chatacter design ...The fact that the characters in this game are so unlikable and badly written makes it hard to sit though the hours of dull finger bang bang combat as you don't care to know what happens in the story...It is generic EA wannbe AAA gunk that appeals to a minority of people that log in to twitter every morning to find out what they are thinking and feeling for the day and decide what to play by tunning into IGN or Shill Up...Corperate sheep...You must like this cause the big comoany made ..All the twitter generated Politically correct and university ideologies are here in this game and the whole thing is just off putting like watching She Hulk or an IGN podcast... The first 5-6 hours are no fun and annoying because tutorials and jak calling kirkan "sir" when kirkan is female and in kirkans bio she has her/she pronouns but she wants to be called sir, you get used to it after some hours though, Enough with the ESG DIE garbage because it takes me out of the fantasy. Graphics a bit grainy but nice on the eyes, music is kind of cool, the gameplay is actually very good with the magic shooting. I think the gameplay and magic shooting is strong and keeps me engaged. Biggest complaint i personally think is the characters and their dialog. I would still recommend this game to anyone who sees this but maybe, if your broke, wait for it on sale or when it comes to Playstation + Full Review »

It is a great game night wait for a sale though if you don't plan on getting the platinum. It is a FPS with magic. I think it is mostly a beautiful game graphically, I had minor issues of slowdown but mostly not notable. It does start slow, the first few hours are tutorials with stretches of game play. Once it opens up and you can level up it is fantastic combat. Full Review »
