[Anderson’s] movies have always proposed — sometimes ingeniously, sometimes exhaustingly, always sincerely — that we might benefit from looking at the world from a fresh vantage. And so it is with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, in which a revolutionary new way of seeing holds the key to an altogether deeper transformation.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a choreographed dance of an experience — one that could have easily felt like a run-on sentence. However, Anderson is skilled enough as a filmmaker to make sure to pace things out with a deliberate and sure hand, utilizing both long takes and clever edits to make 37 minutes fly by like 15.

It’s a short film, but its portrayal of inspiration, self-evident in both its artistry and homage, is simply enormous.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar feels like a project Anderson needed, a way to explore smaller storytelling in a manner that still allows him room to experiment, have fun, and utilize his very specific voice and talents.
As ever with Anderson, the design is meticulous. Some can find this style cloying, but it suits this glorified short perfectly, never outstaying its welcome.
This being a Wes Anderson film, it almost goes without saying the details are delectable.
Unfortunately, its 39 minutes unfold in such motor-mouthed haste, it feels like a dad belting through a bedtime story while the football’s on downstairs.
Roald Dahl é um escritor britânico que já teve inúmeras de suas obras adaptadas ao cinema, entre elas "Matilda", "A fantástica fábrica de chocolate", "O bom gigante amigo", e até mesmo "O fantástico senhor raposo", que fora adaptado pelo próprio Wes Anderson.
Aqui, o diretor novamente adapta um livro do Dahl e o faz com grande maestria e criatividade técnica. A solução para os diversos cenários e a narrativa fluida estão impecáveis.
Depois de derrapar em "Asteroid City", confesso que não estava com tanta expectativa assim. A sequência me lembrou muito a introdução de "Magnólia" pela agilidade com que os fatos são narrados, pela cadência dos diálogos e o humor levemente ácido. mas além dos cenários que são econômicos, porém, muito criativos, aqui finalmente o roteiro está enxuto e linear (não espere algo muito sofisticado, o que é um alento, já que os longas dele são verdadeiros quebra-cabeças) e conta com uma opção de narrador/personagem altamente divertida, a quarta parede definitivamente desmoronada sem soar irritante, em prol de contar a história.
E por mais irônico que possa parecer, senti falta de uma reviravolta ou de um momento de ápice no filme, como se o clímax ficasse meio soterrado pela fluidez de uma leitura em vídeo. Assim, o filme acaba sendo excessivamente narrado e sem uma pausa para contemplação, prejudicando em momentos decisivos, embora tudo o que tenha sido posto seja de puro agrado.
É um filme maduro, no entanto, de um diretor que já tem uma identidade visual muito acertada, e que encontrou o tom condizente com o seu estilo. Mesmo que não surpreenda, tudo é muito agradável de assistir.

Wes Anderson in short film mode is one of the year's best ideas. It is highly ironic that the director recently mentioned that he does not have an aesthetic; you only have to watch 'The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar' to realize how wrong he is. This short is a mini-play with incredible stage design, bullet-like dialogues, and a hilarious story. Feels like reading a pop-up book. Hopefully, the other shorts he made for Netflix are as fun as this one.
