Few debuts have been as impressive or odd as that made by the voice of Claude Rains in this macabre classic based on the novel by H.G.Wells.

I was interested in seeing this film. I like the book, I love Claude Rains and I loved the classics Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein which were also directed by horror maestro James Whale. After finally seeing it I wasn't let down. The only minor problem I had was that Una O'Connor's screaming occasionally got on my nerves, but that's to do with preference. The Invisible Man had held up amazingly well, and the production values look lavish and don't look as though they've creaked. The music is excellent, the direction is top-notch and the screenplay is great. The story is still compelling and does justice to the book, while the atmosphere is suitably eerie and the special effects are pioneering. The acting is fine, Claude Rains was a brilliant actor and gives a superb performance in the title role, despite the fact he spends most of the time swathed in bandages or invisible you know that wonderful voice he has anywhere. All in all, superb and anyone who loved the Frankenstein movies will love this. 9/10 Bethany Cox

The story makes such superb cinematic material that one wonders that Hollywood did not film it sooner. Now that it has been done, it is a remarkable achievement.
The Invisible Man boasts a brilliantly chill and confident performance from (an almost entirely unseen) Claude Rains and a gloriously over-the-top supporting turn from Una O'Connor as his inquisitive landlady. Moreover, its tart, acid tone largely honours the spirit of the novel.
The real strengths of the movie are John P Fulton's remarkable special effects (Rains removing his bandages to reveal nothing, footsteps appearing as if by magic in the snow), lending much-needed conviction to the blatant fantasy; and the fact that we never see the scientist without his bandages until the very end of the film.
Excellent trick photography and a solid plot based on the H.G. Wells novel results in a superior horror film as Rains goes amouk and vows to use his power to rule the world. [11 Aug 1984, p.B3]
The strangest character yet created by the screen [from the novel by H.G. Wells] roams through The Invisible Man.
Man the modern 'remake' of this is not even remotely silly enough to compare to this. This was mostly gas and very entertaining.

I can see why people consider it a classic but I had a hard time getting into it. The over-acting was a bit much at times and kind of took me out of the story a bit. I also wasn't a fan of the second half at all, especially with the whole blackmailing of a co-worker bit. It just didn't work for me. I had a hard time sitting through this one and it's honestly the one I genuinely dislike.
