Fans will see Nick Fury's softer side in The Marvels -- according to the movie's producer.

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, The Marvels producer Mary Livanos reveals that when Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) reunites with Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) for the first time since 2019's Captain Marvel, audiences will see the former S.H.I.E.L.D. leader be a little less serious than his previous MCU outings. "What's great about Nick Fury when paired with Captain Marvel is that it brings out a lightness to him that we really only got to experience in that first Captain Marvel movie," Livanos said. "It's really their relationship that brings out a lot of fun in each other. He's great. He's wonderful."

Line it is Drawn: Comic Book Team-Ups With the Marvels

The Marvels serves as Fury's latest MCU chapter following the events of Secret Invasion on Disney+. The dark tone of the story added to Fury's development as the MCU miniseries explored how Fury's responsibilities to the Skrulls and S.H.I.E.L.D. took a toll on his personal life. As Secret Invasion ended with Fury returning to the S.A.B.E.R. ship with his Skrull wife Priscilla/Varra (Charlayne Woodard), the miniseries showrunner Ali Selim teased how Fury's new attitude sets up his presence in The Marvels. "I thought that was very important for him to come to that point where he understands where he is in the world now and what he needs to be to continue to be the new Nick Fury and to send him off a little sense of: 'I've reconciled that. Now I can do stronger and greater things," Selim said.

The change in Fury's personality was not just something that the creatives at Marvel Studios came up with. Actor Jackson drew upon his childhood experiences to add to Fury's backstory in Secret Invasion. Additionally, Jackson pushed the miniseries' producers to humanize Fury by making him increasingly world-weary after 'The Blip' from Avengers: Infinity War. Fury's confrontation with the past and the broken promises made to the Skrulls set the stage for his new life direction in The Marvels.

The Marvels Director Explains Why The Superhero Team-Up Matters

"Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe," reads the synopsis for The Marvels. "When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels."

The Marvels arrives in theaters on November 10th.
