REVIEW: Marvel's Punisher #1
Frank Castle isn't around anymore but evil still needs to be punished as a new vigilante emerges in Marvel's The Punisher #1. Here's CBR's review.

The Punisher has a long history. However, Frank Castle's history has ended for now. Marvel has put the classic version of the Punisher on the shelf, and it's time for an all-new version to hit the streets. Writer David Pepose and artist Dave Wachter introduce readers to a new skulled killer in Punisher, which follows former SHIELD assassin Joe Garrison on a mission to solve the mystery of who destroyed his family and avenge them.

This new Punisher series supplies the kind of action that fans have come to expect from the character. Garrison is a different character from Castle, but both share a tendency towards ultra-violence that binds them together. This series is two issues in, but it's already something special.

Bucky Barnes decides to target someone who has deserved it for a long time, the Red Skull, and brings together the best possible team for the job. With the writing team Hivemind behind the book, Thunderbolts should be something special, despite its status as an MCU cash-in book.

REVIEW: Marvel's G.O.D.S. #1
Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti set out to re-invent the Marvel Cosmology in G.O.D.S. #1. Here's CBR's review.

Jonathan Hickman is Marvel's hottest ticket. When the writer isn't revitalizing franchises like the Ultimate Universe and the X-Men, he's telling the best sci-fi superhero stories out there. Since leaving the X-books, Hickman hasn't done a lot, but one book was teased from the writer: G.O.D.s. This book was going to take what everyone knew about the Marvel Universe's cosmology and turn on its head. So far, that's exactly what the book has done.

Jonathan Hickman is giving Marvel their own version of DC's Endless, going deeper than ever into cosmic Marvel. Hickman is known for big idea comics, and G.O.D.s feels like it's bigger than anything else he's done so far. This is a special, once in a generation comic, and better than all of that, it's an ongoing. This is a book for every Marvel fan who wants something different from Marvel and its usual characters.

REVIEW: Marvel's Capwolf & the Howling Commandos #1
Stephanie Phillips and Carlos Magno reinvent Capwolf's origin story by winding the clock back but the artwork bogs down an otherwise intriguing setup.

The '90s were an interesting time for Captain America. There are a lot of bad Cap ideas from back then and they sent Captain America's sales down the tube. Surprisingly, one of the better ideas from that time was Capwolf, aka Captain America as a werewolf. It wasn't Marvel's greatest story of all time, but many older fans have a fond memory of it. Capwolf & The Howling Commandos, by writer Stephanie Phillips and artist Carlo Magno, plays off this interesting idea.

Set in WWII, the book follows Cap as he turns into a werewolf on the frontlines of the war against Germany. Capwolf teams up with the Howling Commandos in order to stop some Nazis who want to use magic to turn the tide of the war. Phillips and Magno are great creators, and this comic promises fun, superhero horror perfect for a spooky month.

Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy has surprised readers so far. The book brought back Adam Warlock, and it framed Surfer for the death of Genis-Vell. Marz and Lim haven't lost a step since their original run. This is classic '90s style cosmic Marvel and is better for it.

Werewolf by Night is a Marvel horror legend. His 2022 MCU premiere showed the world how great he can be. MCU synergy isn't always the best thing in the world, but getting a Werewolf By Night series is definitely worth it. However, this one is a twofer because it includes D-list Marvel legend, Elsa Bloodstone. For longtime fans of Marvel horror, this new series is mana from the gods.

Werewolf by Night and Elsa Bloodstone have their problems, and that's one thing that makes the new comic so great. X-Men (Vol. 6) has been momentous at times, but it's also been remarkably uneven. However, after issue twenty-five, the book feels revitalized.

This new X-Men era feels right up Gerry Duggan's alley. Written by Kieron Gillen with art by Lucas Werneck, it's easily usurped the main spot X-Men had and is considered by most to be the line's flagship book, as well as its best title. The end of Sins of Sinister depicts the Quiet Council scrambling to repair the damage that the villain did to them.

May's issue focuses on Storm as she tries to fill the power vacuum left by the imprisoning of Sinister, Xavier, Emma Frost, Exodus, and Hope Summers. It's an intriguing issue, and it bodes well for this book's future. Immortal X-Men is always a must-read, and with Fall of X coming, it's going to stay that way.

Ewing and Caselli's X-Men Red concludes its first dramatic arc, in an all-star climax that spans across the solar system.

X-Men Red has been a surprising read, but that's to be expected from writer Al Ewing. The Storm focused book was a highlight of the line before Sins of Sinister and looks to stay there with its return in May. Artist Jacopo Camagni joins the book for a story that features Xavier confronting Storm about the death of Magneto, as Arakko deals with the calamities that have been standard for the planet and its people.

X-Men Red is in a very interesting place regarding the X-Men books. Readers barely got any time with the aftermath of Judgment Day, and Sins Of Sinister began almost immediately after it. It feels like that's what readers are going to get with this latest run, and if it's anything like what came before, X-Men Red will be sensational.

Wolverine is the X-Men's biggest solo star. Even with the popularity of the Krakoa Era, he's still the only member of the team with his own solo ongoing. Wolverine, by writer Benjamin Percy and regular artist Adam Kubert with multiple back-up artists, has been hitting on all cylinders since it debuted in 2020, giving Wolverine fans the kind of action and characterization they missed while Logan was dead.

Percy has an understanding of who Wolverine is as a character. He writes Wolverine as a warrior poet by way of a dive bar, a brawler with the soul of a samurai. The book's art teams, headlined by Kubert with artist Juan José Ryp currently knocking it out of the park, have been amazing. It's a top-tier book and among Marvel's best solo titles.

Infinity War, by writer Jim Starlin and artist Ron Lim, is the sequel to Infinity Gauntlet, which is a tough act to follow. For this reason, Infinity War remains Marvel's most underrated event book, overshadowed by what came before. This is completely unfair to the comic, which, in a lot of ways, is superior to its predecessor.

Infinity War follows the heroes of the Marvel Universe battling against a hidden foe, Adam Warlock's dark side, the Magus, who has them beat at every turn. Starring the best and brightest Marvel heroes, it even makes Thanos a convincing hero. It's a masterwork of plot and art, with brilliant characterization and pulse-pounding action.

Marvel's event cycle throughout the 2000s hurt the publisher in a lot of ways, but it produced some fantastic event books. One of the best events is 2015's Secret Wars, by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Esad Ribic. Building out of Hickman's Fantastic Four, Avengers, and New Avengers, it presented the aftermath of the Incursions, with Doctor Doom of all people saving creation.

More than just a simple battle between the heroes and Doctor Doom, Hickman dives deep into Doom and his conflict with Reed Richards in this story. Between that and Ribic's breathtaking art, Secret Wars demonstrates exactly what a Marvel comic can do.

Squadron Supreme Is A Forgotten Classic

Creators:

Mark Gruenwald, Bob Hall, Paul Ryan, and John Buscema

Marvel doesn't have the same artistic pedigree as DC, but it has some gems of its own. Foremost among them is Squadron Supreme, by writer Mark Gruenwald and artists Bob Hall, Paul Ryan, and John Buscema. Its complicated and ambiguous narrative stars Marvel's Justice League pastiche deciding to take power over their world.

Squadron Supreme took a serious look at superheroes in a way few Marvel books have. It's still definitely a Marvel-style superhero comic, but that's not always a bad thing, and it has its moments of brilliance. Squadron Supreme is a powerful story, one that questions the role of superheroes in its world, and what could happen in a real-world setting if people with superpowers existed.
