Gundam Evolution

Bandai Namco Entertainment

Gundam Evolution is a team-based FPS built around the iconic anime series. You'll get to pilot Gundam from throughout the series' history, with each version offering a distinct playstyle to help your team achieve victory on the battlefield. The title has launched to mixed reviews, but fans of the franchise will find hours of fun with this quirky competitive shooter.

One of the big draws of Gundam Evolution is its deep roster of playable characters. More than a dozen units are up for grabs, ranging from the iconic RX-78-2 that excels at mid-range combat to the Zaku II that's best used in melee combat. Each unit comes with a different set of skills and attributes, and mastering them all is bound to keep players busy for hundreds of hours. And because Gundam Evolution features fast-paced combat, there's never a dull moment as you come to grips with its learning curve.

Beyond a long list of familiar faces and engaging combat, you'll also be treated to impressive maps and action-packed game modes. Three modes are currently available (Point Capture, Domination, and Destruction), all of which see you and your team trying to outwit the competition and accomplish your goals as fast as possible. These matches are all a blast to play thanks to meticulously crafted levels, along with a progression system that keeps track of your performance and assigns you a rank after each battle.

Gundam Evolution is a great game for fans of the series, but it's far from the only hero shooter on the market. In fact, there are plenty of similar titles that are worth checking out if you're a fan of GunEvo's fast-paced gameplay.

Metascore: 79
Best for: Fans of fast-paced team shooters
Where to buy:

As far as direct alternatives to Gundam Evolution are concerned, Overwatch 2 might be your best option. You'll jump into 5v5 battles that see you chasing after one of many objectives (such as capturing zones or eliminating opponents) as you learn the intricacies of each of its characters. All of its heroes slot nicely into a specific role on the battlefield (DPS, Support, or Tank), making it easy to know what you can do to help lead your team to victory. But while each character fills one of those three roles, they all have something unique to offer. Lucio, for example, can heal nearby teammates, while Sojourn can decimate enemies with their Railgun. The game has a bright future, with several updates planned for the months ahead.

"Overwatch 2 plays brilliantly. It's a wonderful shooter full of depth, with unique heroes to master, maps to learn, and hours of your life to lose all over again." — God is a Geek
