On 4 December 1950, Ensign Jesse Brown was shot down in North Korea. Lt. j.g. Thomas J. Hudner crash-landed his plane in a failed rescue attempt, and was later awarded the Medal of Honor.
1959 - Cmdr. Lawrence E. Flint, Jr., piloting a McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II, betters the existing world altitude record by reaching 98,560 feet above Edwards AFB, Calif.
