Recovery Operations Happening In Manila

There are approximately 3,100 unknown personnel laid to rest within the MACM. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) members continuously work together to disinter these personnel and identify the remains at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.

Medal of Honor recipient laid to rest

Sailors from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard conduct a funeral for U.S. Navy Seaman 1st Class James R. Ward at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington D.C., Dec. 21, 2023.

Seaman Ward was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft in 1941.

Ward was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously and after being accounted for, was returned to his family for burial with full military honors.

DPAA FY23 Year In Review

We are pleased to present our FY23 Year In Review, a labor of love which showcases and highlights the agencies efforts throughout the last year.

"From October 2022 to September 2023, DPAA launched several expeditions to locate and recover missing service members in over 30 countries around the world. These efforts uncovered multiple burial sites, aircraft crash sites and unmarked graves. This work combined with the latest scientific techniques allowed for the agency to account for 158 missing personnel during the fiscal year."

Recovery Operations underway in Laos

Dr. Janet Finlayson, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Scientific Recovery Expert (SRE), scrapes a layer of soil off the inside of a unit during a recovery mission in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Nov. 10, 2023. After determining the site perimeter, Finlayson established a grid system, sectioning the site with stakes and string before beginning excavation unit by unit.

There are currently 1,578 missing service members from the Vietnam War.
