Two new Hobbit featurettes focus on audio and visual effects: watch now

Peter Jackson shows off his tech tricks

The Hobbit has been out in cinemas for a few days now, and if you saw the film in HFR 3D, you'll likely have an opinion one way or the other on whether or not it enhanced the viewing experience.

Whichever side of the fence you fall on however, you'd have to admit the magnitude of the task Jackson and his team faced when creating the movie's myriad effects, a process illuminated by a new pair of behind-the-scenes featurettes.

Many of the costume and prosthetic-based effects work will be familiar from the LOTR series, although (for better or worse) The Hobbit also employs a huge amount of CGI.

Take a look at the first featurette below, before exploring the use of audio effects in the second video…

For our money, The Hobbit looks spectacular in both HFR 3D and 2D (we've been lucky enough to see it in both), with both formats boasting their respective merits. And whatever your preference, the sheer scale of Jackson's filmmaking can't fail to impress.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is in cinemas now. Hurry along and see it, if you haven't already done so...

I kinda wished that less of the orcs and goblins had been CGI especially the white orc (I forget his name :/) not that the CGI wasn't impressive because it was but I think the makeup effects just look more menacing than the digital ones

Loved the film, but there was definitely too much CGI :-(

The reason they went for CGI was probably because 48fps would have made it too obvious that it was make up effects. Personally I thought the CGI was amazing, Wetta always deliver in that department.

too much CGI? are y'all crazy??!! This movie was perfect, there is no way the white orc would have had the same effect if it was a guy in a mask

Well that's up for debate as the Uraki from The Fellowship of The Ring was pretty badass.
