Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (TV)

Source: Light Novel (ongoing @ 14 Volumes, written by Ren Eguchi, illustrated by Masa)

Demographic: Shounen

Animation Studio: MAPPA

Genres: adventure, comedy, fantasy, slice of life

Themes: cooking, goddesses, isekai, magical creatures

Plot Summary: Tsuyoshi Mukōda was nothing special in modern Japan, so when he was summoned to a world of swordplay and sorcery, he thought he was ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Too bad the kingdom that summoned him only got him by mistake.

Not only was he not one of the three summoned heroes, but his stats were laughable compared to theirs. On top of that, there's something really sketchy about this kingdom. He immediately left to make his own way in this other world. The only thing Mukōda can rely on is his unique skill: the "Online Supermarket," a skill that allows him to buy modern goods in a fantasy world. It's useless for combat, but if he plays his cards right, he could lead a comfortable life.

At least, that's what Mukōda thinks, but it turns out modern food bought with this skill has some absurd effects. Mukōda introduces ridiculously tasty modern cooking to a fantasy world and gets some ridiculous repeat customers begging for more.

Episode 3

I'm kind of sucker for food shows so no huge surprise that I'm following this. I'm not particularly bothered by the lack of a strong narrative engine - there are other shows that are giving me that this season. It's okay just to kick back and watch animated versions of delicious food. I do hope some other characters fall into Sui's orbit... a cute girl would be nice.

I almost dropped the show after the first episode - something about the MC's sickly, crap eating grin was getting on my nerves. But I gave it the three episode benefit of a doubt, and to me at least, it's now a fairly painless, mild pleasure.

I could be wrong, but somehow, I doubt there's much romance in store for this show. Not unless Fenrir goes in heat.

Laughing Yes, the spectacle of Fenrir in heat is something I'd like to avoid. I forgot to mention that the other aspect of the show that really appeals to me is the wish fulfillment element of having access to an online grocery service where you can buy virtually any food and drink item cheaply and have it delivered instantly combined with unlimited storage space where nothing ever rots. For me, the only thing that scores higher on the wish fulfillment scale would be being supplied with an endless parade of hot chicks who are warm for my form.

This show has grown on me over the past few episodes. It's become one of my chillaxin' anime this season.

I definitely try not to watch this when I'm hungry. I'm glad that Tsuyoshi's circle is widening but I would have preferred the new party member wasn't just a slime. I am hoping that Ninrir will continue to be a presence but it doesn't seem like she'll descend from her godly realm, which is too bad.

I have the same problem with this show that I do with every other food show I ever watch, whether live-action or animated: I inevitably crave eating whatever happens to be showcased. Er, maybe not the orc meat.

Heh.

I live near a barbecue joint that's really delicious, but they have lots of cartoons of cute, smiling pigs all over the place. It's always seemed a little strange to me, or at least like a questionable marketing strategy. But that's nothing compared to this recent anime trend of treating walking, talking, armor-wearing, weapon-using orcs as a pork variant.

After making it to episode 11, it still seems a little strange to me that a slime can have taste buds. After all, over in Farming in Another World, they use slimes as septic tanks to eat excrement. And in By the Grace of the Gods. the MC has slimes digest bodily excretions and blood stains and fungi and monster entrail bits and such from clothing.

Seems to me like slimes need to unionize.

That said, this show has grown on me. I've never watched as many anime in a single season as I have this winter, but at the same time, this season doesn't really have any new Chainsaw Man or Mob Psycho or Konosuba anime that really grab me and seem to develop a following out there in fan land so that they'll continue on. What it does have is tons of anime that are pleasant enough to watch week after week without having enough problems to make me drop them. Kind of like making par, I guess.

This anime fits that description. It's formulaic, but for some reason, I never get tired of seeing Fenrir watching intently while the MC does his food prep. At first the MC annoyed me, but it's gotten to be kind of amusing, watching him get reluctantly dragged up the power ladder by the deities and his insistent familiars. I'm even looking forward to seeing him meet the "heroes" from his world at some point and thinking this anime will probably get another season.

Episode 12 (Finale)

This was one anime I made sure never to watch on an empty stomach. I'm kind of s aucker for food anime so no huge shock that I checked this one out and stuck with it. I'm rating it So-So because even though I liked it, I felt it was more limited than it had to be. I did get tired of the Fenrir-Mukoda "feed me!" dynamic.

What I wish the story had been is Mukoda appearing in this world with his absurd camp cooking skill and linking up with a party of strong adventurers. The gag would be that he's useless as a fighter or anything but the party keeps him around because of the delicious food. For his part, he needs them to kill all the strong monsters that taste so good. And I would have liked more female characters. Man, this show was a real sausage party. But whatevs, it was what it was and it is clear the "adventure" could continue. I hope it does.

*tummy rumbles*

Oops, time for din-din.

I on the other hand don't have a huge amount of interest in food anime, usually something else has to get my interest. I would say it did have the parts to get my interest, but kind of mostly by what it didn't do. There was no love interest or a harem in sight, so it had to actually not lean on something like fanservice. Fanservice can be nice, but it does feel very much like it is so common in the fantasy/isekai genre in the exact same ways, that it is actually kind of refreshing for a show, especially with a male lead, to feel like it doesn't need that stuff. His partner is even another guy, and they are mostly bros.

This show probably even had the least weird feeling slime in anime that I have seen, it is mostly just cute, and in a show that otherwise doesn't rely on just being cute.

I wouldn't say it is all perfect, because really it does have a bit of a downside that for a food anime in a fantasy setting, it falls a lot back on Fenrir is just so uber strong that there really isn't any threat. A lot of its jokes really are just Fenrir killed something really strong, Mukoda shows other people the kills and they confirm it is really strong. It wasn't the only joke, but it was enough that it did actually get a bit boring. That and the other bit is that Mukoda can just summon modern reliable cooking stuff and then cook regular good food, which some was interesting, but it almost betrays that the fantasy stuff as almost window dressing for an author who must really be into food. I also find it kind of uncomfortable that apparently orcs look relatively intelligent to be humanoid, and they eat the flesh.

Going off Blood's idea, I would be sort of curious for a setting of a group of adventurers to be more grounded. And yeah, maybe some more female characters would not have gone awry, outside of the goddesses that were not really characters. Going off at least the English name, he doesn't really do much campfire cooking rather than camp cooking. Looking at a lot of fantasy stuff the camp is a would be big thing that doesn't get a lot of attention, the idea of focusing on that kind of actually sounds, and how one could cook.

My rating will be Decent (6/10), worth watching, but I don't really know if there would be much of a reason to continue watching if more came out. Now, I too have to go have dinner after writing this.

I hope that they do another season of this show because, according to the web novel, things start getting more interesting after this point.

To keep from making the rest of this post spoilers, I will only say that Fel finally gets his wish and Mukoda gets a bit more courage. There is currently 644 episodes in the web novel, so there is a lot of source material to draw from.

Episode 01: My Absurd Skill is Unexpectedly Useful
----------------------------------

Summary:

Tsuyoshi Mukohda is summoned to an alternate world with the "Online Grocery" skill, then hires Werner and his Iron Will adventurers to escort him to the neighboring kingdom. One night, his cooking attracts a legendary wolf monster called a Fenrir, that agrees to become Mukohda's contracted familiar in exchange for three meals a day.
----------------------------------

Comments:

A little late, but better than never.

The concept sounded so "absurd," I had to check it out. Isekai titles are a dime-a-dozen, these days. And I'm very hesitant to check many out, as I'm scared they'll be super generic or silly, and a waste of my time. The only two factors that made this one even a blip on my radar were the cooking theme and the fact that it's MAPPA.

I think food is one of the few things that can put any sentient mammalian creature into submission. Food's not just sustenance, it's a joy of living. And I love how a tasty meal was even able to nab one of the strongest mythical creatures in that world. "Eat, drink, and be merry," as the old saying goes.

A lot of the screen caps will probably be food.

Looking back on the show, the food never failed to look extremely mouth watering. I also love the music during the cooking scenes.

Episode 02: The Salient Familiar is a Living Legend
----------------------------------

Summary:

Mukohda names the Fenrir Fel, who agrees to hunt for their meat as long as Mukohda cooks it. Mukohda decides to register at the Merchants Guild, intending to use Online Grocery to become a traveling trader and see the world. Additionally, he joins the Adventurers Guild to sell valuable monster parts left over from Fel’s meals.
----------------------------------

Comments:

This show has such a simple and chill atmosphere to it. Mukohda is pretty useless in terms of actual battle prowess, but still manages to be, probably, the strongest, most over-powered person in that world because of his control over Fel with the tasty foods he can prepare. At this point, I'm convinced food is the ultimate equalizer for any sentient being with taste buds.

I also love how unassuming both, Mukohda is as a person, and how it ties into the art and animation. When he's traveling or talking, the art is pretty plain, but effective enough. And when he gets to cookin', the production values ramp up, and the show gets to the juicy stuff!

You'd think with him just cooking every now and then, there's not a lot of progression. And yet, he's making progress as an adventurer and merchant. It's a juxtaposition that makes me think, "hmm, I dunno about that.." and then all of a sudden, "hmm, yeah, that actually works!" Just like the food he makes.

Bless you, MAPPA.

Episode 03: My Super Power is All About Cooking
----------------------------------

Summary:

Mukohda completes his Guild quest quickly, with Fel hunting for more monster meat, which they ultimately use to make spaghetti. Mukohda has the monsters butchered for 200 gold and celebrates by introducing Fel to Japanese Wagyu beef, which boosts Fel’s stats so high he hunts stronger monsters all night.
----------------------------------

Comments:

The power of Wagyu. I think I've only ever had it once in my life at a Brazilian steakhouse that had all kinds of tasty meats. But I need to go an actual Japanese place, though, and get the real deal. I remember how freakin' tender that thing was, and I'm sure actual Wagyu from Japan is even better!

I'm convinced the writer of these light novels is a total foodie. How else would the meals his protagonist makes sound so good? A lot of these dishes look really simple, but the presentation is what makes it so mouth-watering.

The comradery between Mukohda and Fel is pretty funny. It's almost like a buddy system, only one buddy does all the cooking, and the other all fighting, which incidentally turns the carcasses into more cooking. I mean, if you really like cooking and are good at it, you're pretty much made, at that point. Knowledge is power, power is money, food knowledge is food power, and food power is food money. And with anime physics, you'll obviously never get fat eating all those delectable items.

Such a great, relaxing show, this is.
