Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz has confirmed that the upcoming sixth and final season of the hit Netflix series will leave the door open for potential future spin-offs.

During a recent interview with UPI, Hurwitz teased that there are Cobra Kai characters who they believe have more stories to tell beyond Season 6. "Hopefully, the characters are rich enough that if there is an opportunity in the future to pick up with them again one day, they'll still be characters people are hoping to spend time with," he said. In addition, Hurwitz revealed that fans should expect to see lots of new characters who will be joining Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence in the final installment. "We've also added so many characters to the mix and storylines to the mix that it's constantly evolving what this final season is going to be," he continued. "We are taking ourselves to places in the finale that we think are going to be fun, surprising and exciting."

Xolo Maridueña Pitches a Cobra Kai Reunion Series Set 30 Years Later

Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña previously addressed the upcoming conclusion of Cobra Kai, describing it as a "bittersweet" moment. "I really grew up with everyone on the show," he said. "Just as those high school years are important for kids – those same years, I was spending with these guys. So, I just hope that I get to work with them again." He also expressed his desire to reunite with the Cobra Kai cast in a sequel series set three decades after the original, adding, "I just hope that we get to reunite in 30 years and do, you know, Cobra Kai v2 or whatever that looks like. I love those guys."

Maridueña most recently starred in a DC Studios movie, which served as his first major feature project. Despite the superhero movie’s underwhelming box office performance, it received positive reviews from critics, who have singled out Maridueña’s star-making performance. In a previous interview, the rising actor revealed that his time working with William Zabka and Ralph Macchio in Cobra Kai helped him gain the confidence he needed to prepare for his first leading role.

"Both William Zabka and Ralph Macchio displayed what it means to be number one on the call sheet, with the way they carried themselves and the way they interacted with everyone," Maridueña explained. "Not only the cast, but the crew, too; they made everyone feel like they belonged. I was affected by it, and it made me confident in being an actor and as a kid who was a little nervous as to what this world was like."

According to Hurwitz, it was his own decision to end Cobra Kai with its upcoming sixth season because they wanted to conclude the story on their own terms. However, they promised fans that the Miyagiverse would continue to live on after the Karate Kid spin-off’s series finale, teasing potential spin-offs in the future. In September 2022, it was also announced that Sony Pictures was developing the next Karate Kid movie, with Jackie Chan reportedly reprising his role from 2010’s Jaden Smith reboot.

At the time of writing, the release date for Cobra Kai Season 6 has not yet been revealed.
