Could “All Is Lost” be the capstone of Robert Redford's long and illustrious career?

That was the buzz at the Cannes Film Festival, where writer-director J.C. Chandor's drama – in which Redford plays a man fighting for survival when his one-man sailboat springs a leak on the ocean – debuted to rave reviews in May.

Now the first trailer for “All Is Lost” has hit the internet, and it looks like Redford (who turns 77 later this month) is delivering the goods.

The movie doesn't arrive in theaters until October, so all we get for now is a taste.

The box-office race this weekend revolves around the number 2: “2 Guns” or “The Smurfs 2” (the latter of which opened Wednesday).

The action movie “2 Guns” is a ridiculously overblown buddy-cop movie, with purple-prose dialogue, explosions and gunplay in abundance, and machismo to burn. Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg make it work, though, with a breezily antagonistic chemistry as they play rival undercover officers who are double-crossed while trying to bring down a Mexican drug lord (Edward James Olmos). It's rough and violent, but entertaining.

The week's art-house slate isn't too spec...

It’s hard to miss the number of freakishly fit people walking around downtown Salt Lake City this week.

It can mean only one thing: the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market is back in town.

The semi-annual trade show (there’s also a Winter Market in January), in which the people who make outdoor gear show their wares to the people who sell outdoor gear, is ensconced in the Salt Palace through Saturday. It’s closed to the public, so The Cricket serves up this slideshow to give you a taste of what’s going on inside.

“The Smurfs 2” (opening today) is better than the first movie, and heaven help me if that’s used in a quote by a movie studio. It’s still not that good.

The story lands the little blue creatures in Paris, on a mission to rescue Smurfette (voiced by Katy Perry) from the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria). Gargamel, Smurf fans may recall, created Smurfette to be an evil temptress — but she turned good thanks to the loving care of Papa Smurf (voiced by Jonathan Winters, in his final role). Now, Smurfette wonders if she’s truly a good Smurf, or if she should ally herself with the Gargamel-created Naughties, Vexy (voiced by Chris...

Get ready to get scared silly or get shot at, without getting drenched in fake blood.

This weekend's likely box-office champ is “Red 2,” the gun-heavy sequel to the 2010 hit. Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren and Mary-Louise Parker return for this tale of retired assassins (Willis and Malkovich), this time having to bounce around the globe to clear their names in regards to a Soviet nuke plot. Byung-hun Lee (“G.I. Joe”), Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins join the cast, but there's a lot less fun this time around. (There is a ridiculously high body count for a PG-13 movie, though.)

It's robots fighting monsters, or it's idiots fighting idiots, at the box office this week.

“Pacific Rim” is the monster mash of a geeky movie fan's dreams, as director Guillermo Del Toro (“Pan's Labyrinth,” “Hellboy”) imagines a future in which interdimensional monsters invade Earth – and humanity counters by building giant robots to combat them. The movie is loaded with exciting set pieces and cool effects (even better on IMAX 3-D), which overcome the slightly stilted dialogue and wooden acting.
